Description
Catherine Pine was a nurse who worked closely with the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) and was particularly close to Emmeline Pankhurst. She nursed Emmeline through poor health caused by hunger strikes.
This medal is very similar to the ‘Hunger Strike Medal’ or ‘Medal of Valour’ that was awarded to those who members of the WSPU who went on hunger strike. However, Pine’s medal differs because she did not personally go on hunger strike. The medal was awarded to Catherine Pine for duty and each of the 11 bars has a date which refers to a time that Emmeline Pankhurst or her daughter Sylvia was nursed by Catherine Pine.
