Carriage Cleaning Day at Claydon

Did you know? The Florence Nightingale Museum has Nightingale’s original carriage from the Crimean War in its collection!

Unfortunately due to its large size, we are unable to display it in the museum, but we are very lucky that our friends at the Claydon Estate have the space to look after it for us. The carriage is on display in the Claydon Courtyard.

As part of our responsibility to looked after the objects under our care, we recently worked with the Carriage Foundation to undertake a condition assessment of the carriage to see if it needed any conservation work. Thankfully it is in a good condition overall but does need a little care and attention as it has been on display for the past few years.

We are delighted to invite you to join the museum, the Claydon Estate and the Carriage Foundation while we give the carriage a good clean and give an insight in Nightingale’s life and use of the carriage as well as the history of carriages. You will also be able to learn about the techniques we use to care for the carriage to ensure we preserve it for future generations.

The Claydon Estate is open 10am-5pm.
