On the 31st December 1852 Nightingale reflected on the past year. The last day of the year. I am so glad this year is over. Nevertheless it has not been wasted, I trust. I have remodelled my whole religious belief from beginning to end. I have learnt to know God. I have recast my social belief; I have them both written for use, when my hour is come. The tangible result was a booklet entitled Begin. Dedication. To the Artisans of England, now published for the first time.

Description
Florence Nightingale cannot be understood without knowledge of her theology, and strong religious beliefs. Her lifelong work within the world of nursing was driven by her belief that she had been called upon by God to do his work. For this reason, it is worthwhile making this book, never before published, available as it is her first theological work. It might be less than one hundred pages, but it lays out the foundation for her theology and has lost little of its significance. In the middle of the nineteenth century traditional Christian ideas and values were being questioned by many: theologians, politicians, industrialists and scientists alike, and only a few years after 1852, in 1859, Darwin’s On the Origin of Species appeared. It was an era of great upheaval within society in many areas, resulting in greater secularization as well as a growth in religious organisations such as the Salvation Army a decade later.
This is a fascinating read, in which Nightingale tackles such questions as: How far and by what means is man individually and collectively able to fulfill those desires to which, in accordance with law, the constitution of human nature is adapted? It gives an insight into the character of the woman who changed nursing forever, and we get to see her in a different light, as a religious thinker and commentator.
