Description

Florence Nightingale was a prolific writer, she wrote over 15,000 letters and 200 articles, pamphlets and books in her lifetime. This set of 8 notecards has been printed with 8 quotes taken from her writing.

“What are we without pens, ink and paper? Cats?” Florence Nightingale often consulted with William Farr and wrote this in a letter dated 10th of December 1863. William Farr was a noted statistician and epidemiologist.

“A small pet animal is often an excellent companion for the sick.” Florence Nightingale was a great animal lover and saw how pets could raise the spirits of their sick owners. This quote comes from Notes on Nursing.

“…there is nothing yet discovered which is a substitute to the English patient for his cup of tea.” This quote is taken from Florence Nightingale’s seminal work, Notes on Nursing. In the chapter called What Food? she talks about the English love of tea and how it is a sign that a patient’s condition is improving when their craving for tea returns.

“Whenever I am infuriated, I revenge myself with a diagram.” Florence Nightingale wrote this in a letter to Sidney Herbert on the 19th of August 1857. The letter voiced her concern over the delay in relaying mortality data to her which she had asked for 3 months prior.

“Let us love one another better than we have done.” 10 year old Florence Nightingale wrote this in a note to her older sister Parthenope. The sister’s were very different and often disagreed with each other.

“I attribute my success to this, I never gave or took an excuse.” This quote was written by Florence Nightingale as a private note to herself in 1859 and was possibly in memory of a conversation she had with the ambassador of Constantinople in 1854.

“Nursing is an art;” This quote comes from a commemorative piece titled Una and the Lion, which Florence Nightingale wrote about Agnes Elizabeth Jones. Jones trained at the Nightingale Training School before going on to become Superintendent of the Liverpool Workhouse Infirmary.

“This is the life. Now I know what it is to live and love life…” Florence Nightingale wrote this to her mother whilst training to be a nurse at the Deaconesses Institute, Kaiserswerth, Germany.
