Description

A very accessible book covering the complex workings of a hospital and complex things that go on within it’s walls. Brightly coloured, and with lots happening on every page, this is a great way to discuss hospitals with younger children. It is useful for those going to visit friends or relatives, as well as those children who are going into hospital themselves. Lots of different departments are looked at, A&E, Maternity, Outpatients and so on. Within outpatients, Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Asthma clinics are all discussed among others. Overnight stays also appear, and we see lots going on from a play specialist helping children to have a fun right through to a nurse having to head off and empty a sick bowl. The ways that doctors can find out what is wrong with us is gone into, from explaining why blood tests can help and why they may want to look at your wee, through to showing how scans and x-rays are carried out.

Individuals who work in hospitals helped put this extremely informative book together, and you and your child get to try and find them in the busy hospital. This is a lovely book that brings the hospital to life. It goes into complex issues in an accessible way for children and aims to make hospitals a much less daunting proposition for younger children. With over 50 flaps it is a fun and interactive book lovingly illustrated with pictures that will themselves lead to conversations around what is going on. As ever with Usborne there are Quick links that run alongside the book and that can be accessed through the Usborne website. There is even a child centred leaflet that can be downloaded from the website to partner this book called Coming to Hospital: A Guide to What Goes On. The book, however, stands by itself and you do not need use any of the digital resources should you chose not to. Helpful, fun and informative this is a great read for any child, whether they are heading to hospital or not. Thoroughly recommended.
