Florence Nightingale was the first female member of the London Statistical Society, later the Royal Statistical Society. The Lady of the Lamp changed how society viewed nurses and nursing, but she was also a formidable mathematician, and creator of the coxcomb chart. The quote on the front cover of this squared paper notebook comes from a letter she wrote to friend Sidney Herbert on the 19th April 1857. The letter voiced her concern over the delay in relaying mortality data to her which she had asked for three months prior. It also features a reproduction of her exquisite signature.
