Description
This book is a fascinating read, written in accessible language and introducing to the reader the main characters in the story, from all sides and all backgrounds. Following on from the introduction, and a study of the wider context of military nursing in 1854, the book is broken into three sections. Firstly, Government imposed nursing, which includes Nightingale’s nursing team; secondly, Sisterhood nursing, including British Anglican and Catholic nuns as well as sisters within French hospitals; and finally, Doctor directed nursing, including Russian sisters, Ottoman nursing and nursing in the British civilian hospitals in Smyrna and Renkioi. Throughout these sections the author illustrates the barriers that nurses had to overcome to gain recognition of the crucial role they played during the course of the Crimean War
The Bulletin of the History of Medicine called this book ‘… a must for anyone interested in early history of nursing, history of military nursing, and history of the Crimean War’ and the UK Association for the History of Nursing has labelled it a work of exemplary scholarship.
Carol Helmstadter is a retired neurosurgical nurse who holds degrees in both history and nursing. She was Government Relations Officer for Ontario Nurses Association and an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Graduate Department of the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto
