Summer Holiday Activity

Victorian Toys Day

Families can enjoy free activities at the museum this summer. During the school holidays there are hands-on making events and performances to inspire the whole family and encourage learning. All events and activities can be found in the What’s On section of this website.

Make a Thaumatrope and play with some traditional Victorian toys!

A Thaumatrope was a popular toy in the Victorian period – it is a very early form of animation, making two different images look like they are appearing at the same time! We will show you how to make one for yourself and all materials are included. We will also have other Victorian toys to play with including the ever-popular cup-and-ball! Join us and play like a Victorian for the day!

Visit the museum, learn about Florence, participate in this free activity, and take home your very own thaumatrope!

We would love everyone to be able to take part in this activity so if you can’t make it to the museum please use our free ‘How To’ guide below to make your own thaumatrope at home.
