Talk by Lynn McDonald

Mrs K.A. Pratt, the First Black Nurse in the NHS, Nigerian Nursing Leader.

Talk by Lynn McDonald, PhD, former Canadian MP, fellow, Royal Historical Society exploring the outstanding Nigerian nursing pioneer, Mrs Kofoworola Abeni Pratt (1915-92).

Pratt’s goal was to become a nurse, then, as in Nightingale’s Day, an unseemly occupation for a woman from a privileged family. With her husband’s support she came to London in 1946, to become the first black woman to qualify in nursing at the Nightingale School. She was on duty in July 1948, when the National Health Service opened.
