Sarah Brown visits the Museum

Sarah Brown celebrated Florence Nightingale’s birthday on 12 May 2009 by visiting the museum and was presented with the new Florence Nightingale Anniversary Rose for the rose garden at No 10 Downing Street. The rose was developed by Jackson & Perkins for the Florence Nightingale International Foundation - the premier foundation of the International Council of Nurses. The rose was presented by Christine Hancock, former President of the ICN and Caroline Worthington, the museum's Director.

Sarah then twittered "Went to Florence Nightingale Museum by St Thomas's hospital London this morning - what a little gem devoted to a great woman" 1:03 PM May 12th.

As well as Florence Nightingale’s Birthday, Tuesday 12th May is also International Nurses Day.

New Biography
The long awaited biography 'Florence Nightingale: The Woman and Her Legend', by Mark Bostridge was published in September 2008. Mark Bostridge was photographed in the Museum and interviewed in the Independant on Sunday, 28th September. See it here.


New Florence Nightingale Letters
The Museum has acquired 33 letters written by Florence Nightingale to Miss Jane Elizabeth Styring. Miss Styring was a Nightingale Nurse who nursed in Canada and later became Matron of Paddington Infirmary. Amongst other things, the letters detail Florence’s advice about the nursing posts she was considering.

Florence Nightingale in the Radio Times
The BBC broadcasted the drama "Florence Nightingale" on Sunday 1st June 2008. The Director Norman Stone was photographed at the Museum and interviewed in the Radio Times 31st May - 6 June 2008.
